Aku Tongmi

Image
Aku Tongmi (1913 - 2007) Even after his demise, the entire nation pays reverence to his tunes, for it was Aku Tongmi who first composed the tunes for Bhutan’s National Anthem (Druk Tshenden Koepai Gyelkhab Na). Chimi Dorji, popularly known to us as Aku Tongmi, was born in the year 1913 at Digala, Chikhor (Upper Kheng) in Zhemgang. As a kid he would regularly accompany his uncle to keep watch over the crops. As the story goes, during one such day, when they were watching over the maize fields, he came upon his uncle being mauled by a bear. Desperate to save his uncle, he swung his sword at the bear but then fate dealt him with a cruel blow at the very moment. Though it was the bear that he was swinging his sword at, it was his uncle that the sword landed upon. His uncle succumbed and ever since the incident he came to be known as Aku Tongmi. A painful reminder of the unfortunate turn of event that day. The name stuck and remained as an integral part of his identity right ...

Raven’s crown (Uzha Jarog Dongchen)

Image
The first Raven Crown, was designed for Trongsa Poenlop Jigme Namgyal (1825-1881) by his tutor, lama Jangchub Tsöndru. The first prototype of the founding monarch's Raven Crown was first devised as a battle helmet for Jigme Namgyel (1825–1881). Also Known as the Black Regent, he wore it in the war against his many rivals within the country and against the British who tried, unsuccessfully, to subdue him. The bird represents a form of Mahakala, Bhutan's guardian deity. This first version of the Raven Crown was conceived more as a magical helmet than a symbol of royalty. Imbued with the essence of two of the great protector Yeshey Gonpo (Mahakala) and the Raven Headed Mahakala of Action (Legon Jarok Dongchen), it was intended to associate these deities permanently with its wearer. The crown or headdress represents him as the main protector of Bhutan. Pc: Alamy Source: The lens Queen [facebook]

Zhongar Dzong (For reading pleasure)

Image
"Let's not forget some of the History" This Dzong is the Bhutanese equivalent of Count Dracula’s castle. The present-day eerie tales that abound about the ruins of the Zhongar Dzong are as spectacular as its origin and history. At a cursory glance, the spine-chilling claims of the people in the nearby villages’ seem real. The setting is truly other-worldly: the roughly six-acre confines of the castle with its gaunt reddish brown walls, fleetingly visible through a dense undergrowth of ferns and giant creepers, is out of bounds for the humans, lest misfortune visit upon the intruder or his family. Girding a mound that protrudes from the breast of a thickly forested mountain, the Dzong is otherwise left all alone, preserving its ancient secrets within its weather-beaten walls. But not so long ago, the fortress and its chieftains played a pivotal role in the kingdom’s power politics, the legacy of which has defined the history of eastern Bhutan and the nation as a whole...

Allos of Mr.Lakusu

I was married, had been with my wife for 15 years. Then I left her 2 months short of our 10 year wedding anniversary. We were parents to two beautiful children, who are in their late teens now, but were only seven and nine years old when I walked out. I travelled for work, stayed in a different hotel at least three nights a week. That’s how I met Eve*. We got to know each other over time. We became Facebook friends. We sent messages to each other all day and night. She was also married, also had two kids. We had so much in common, we soon fell in love. I felt like she 'got' me. This was all during a very trying time in my marriage. I wasn’t happy, I didn’t look forward to going home. My wife had put on weight, we hardly ever spoke, she always looked so miserable. Little did I realise that I was the reason she was so down and depressed. I didn’t pay her any attention. I took her for granted. I was too busy wishing my life was more exciting, being romanced online, sp...
